Adobe Portable Document Format  (PDF) is the standard for electronic document distribution worldwide. Adobe PDF is a universal file format that preserves all the fonts, formatting, graphics, and color of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it. Adobe PDF files are compact and can be shared, viewed, and navigated  by anyone with free software. PDF files are the most universal file format and can be read on any computer with any operating system. Most regular computer users already have Abobe's Reader installed and the reader is integrated into Microsoft's internet explorer.

The acrobat reader that can be used on most computers and special versions are available for compact and hand held computers. According to Adobe, " Acrobat Reader is the ultimate way to view the growing number of eBooks in the marketplace today. Acrobat eBook Reader combines a vivid reading experience with an easy-to-use, intuitive interface and features you won't find anywhere else. It's easy to download the free software — just select the Windows or Macintosh version. The main limitation of a reader display is to size the page properly.

The Adobe Digital Editions, combines a reader, librarian and an interface to a number of portable devices such as the Sony Reader. We  reviewed the 2009 version and gave this software a very good rating. We read eBooks on laptops and a desktop but did not attempt to upload files to a portable reader.  Here is the Adobe description:

If you use Digital Editions, be sure to open the navigation pane (in the Reading menu) and click on table of contents. This is collapsible menu that allows you to to find topics quickly and move through the book. You can also use the search ( find) function to look for keywords or phrases. Add all your PDF files to the libraby so they are easy to find.

PDF viewing on  BlackBerry cell phones. SLG Mobile released BlackBerry Software in 2009, the BeamReader, that allows original quality viewing.
